Does a fake tan provide my skin with a natural sun protection (SPF) as a natural tan does?
Fake tan products do not give your skin a natural SPF (Sun Protection Factor) as does a natural suntan, so therefore does not provide your skin with any natural sun protection.
The active ingredient of a fake tan lotion has been commonly a colorless sugar known as dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When applied to the skin this sugar reacts with the dead skin cells of the epidermis to promote a color change that is the fake tan. This fake tan will normally last up to about a week.
As this fake tan process does not involve the production of melanin there can be no increase in the skins natural SPF.
